The Iris Family

Iris pseudacorus
Iris pseudacorus

A large family of Monocotyledons which are usually herbaceous with rhizomes, corms or bulbs. Like the Liliaceae there are 6 tepals (petals that are also sepals) but there are only three stamens and the style usually has three branches.

Closely allied families in the UK are Liliaceae (6 stamens), Agavaceae and Dioscoreaceae (dioecious).

Some confusion occurs between the Lily and Iris families in common names - eg "Autumn Crocus" may often refer to a Colchicum (Liliaceae). The stamen count usually gives the true family away.
